2600 Bros is a hack of Super Mario Bros. that replaces NES graphics and characters with Atari 2600 graphics and characters with text changed to create an all-new story.

This game was inspired by another Super Mario Bros. ROM hack with a similar theme, aptly known as Atario.

The object of the game is to defeat the evil Green Dragon from the classic Atari 2600 game Adventure and rescue E.T. from the game E.T. The Extraterrestrial in an attempt to revive the player-character's video game career.

Features of this hack include graphics ripped from many other games, (from another system no-less), as well as minor text-editing.

This hack has been met with wide interest and applauded for not only re-imagining one game, but also celebrating another system altogether in the process.

[edit] Criticism

Criticism has been minor, with some misunderstanding the hack and not believing it to be an actual hack, just a heavily-edited video. These complaints have come from those that worked on the Atari 2600 or have hacked that system, and know that that system typically did not make games that supported a smoothly-scrolling screen, as well as the intricacies in game development that came with it.

However, this hack was made not to recreate the Atari 2600, but to emulate it. Therefore, the hardware limitations were not imposed as that would have been completely unnecessary in terms of this hack's purpose.
