[edit] Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog
When SEGA released Sonic and Knuckles on the MegaDrive, the cartridge featured "Lock-On Technology" which allow another game cartridge to be connected to the original game cartridge via a socket on the top. In Sonic and Knuckles, this allowed you to play as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and also unlocked bonus content in both games. This however, could not be done with the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
In the ROM hacking community, creating a patch that allowed the gamer to play as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog was considered the "Holy Grail of ROM Hacking" because this kind of hack was almost impossible to create. On September 11, 2005, Stealth created a hack that allowed you to do just that called Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog (Knuckles in Sonic 1, or S1K for short)
Knuckles in Sonic 1 one gives Knuckles all the moves he has in Sonic and Knuckles, including gliding, wall climbing, and a spin dash, which were not featured in Sonic 1.
